Chester-born Danny Murphy came through the Academy ranks
at Crewe Alexandra, scoring 33 goals in 151 starts before
securing a dream move to his boyhood heroes Liverpool in
the summer 1997 for a then record £3 million. He helped
the Anfield club to success in the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA
Cup, European Super Cup and Community Shield before moving
on to Charlton in the summer of 2004.
Murphy was a regular in Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad
in the build up to the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan, only
for a foot injury to rule him out at the last moment. Murphy
has made nine appearances for England scoring his only goal
in a friendly encounter against Paraguay at Anfield in April
2002. England won the game 4-1.
